Friday 14th September 2007
Dear Parents,
As we approach the September Weekend, a gentle reminder pupils return to school on Tuesday 18th at 8.50am. There will be no newsletter next week as it is a short week. I hope everyone enjoys the September holiday.
Pupil Council
Our first meeting will take place on Friday 21st September in the morning. I am looking forward to meeting with the pupils and hearing their ideas and views.
New Beginnings Mass
Our own start of session mass takes place on Wednesday 26th September at 9.00am in St John?s Church. Pupils should make their way directly to Church. Pupils should be seated by 8.50am. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to parents to join us on this important occasion. I am sure it will be a wonderful celebration. If there are parents who do not wish their child to attend, please bring them to school at 10.15am .
Friday ? Early Close
Another reminder that:
P1 & P2 -dismiss at 11.55am on a Friday
P3 ? P7 -dismiss at 12.05 on a Friday
It is important that pupils are collected at these times. There are occasions when school staff, both teaching and non-teaching, will attend training opportunities in other venues in the city, on a Friday afternoon. In this respect, please understand the need for your child to be collected punctually.
Feast Day Mass
Four of our senior pupils accompanied me to Holy Rood Feast Day Mass on Thursday 13th September, in the afternoon. This is to the second time that pupils from the feeder primaries have been invited to attend. His Eminence, Cardinal Keith Patrick O?Brien was the main Celebrant. The pupils are; Lewis Marshall, Cecile Becquemont, Rachel Dickson and Chloe Marshall. Well done boys and girls you were a credit to St John?s!
Tesco Vouchers re Sport for Schools
Just to let parents know that we are collecting Tesco Vouchers again.
Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday to all our pupils who celebrate their birthdays in September.
Extra Curricular Activities
These will begin shortly. Look out for details in our next Newsletter.
Scooters & Bikes in the Playground
Pupils should dismount from their scooter or bike and wheel them into the playground fixing them securely to the bike racks which are situated in the back playground, behind the hall storage area and not secured to the front of the school. Earlier on in the week, there was a collision which resulted in a child being knocked over and sustaining an injury. So please, discourage all pupils from doing this.
Drumming Workshop
If you have not paid for you child?s Drumming Workshop, please £2.70 in a sealed envelope to your child?s class teacher by Friday 21st September.
Portobello Open Door Event
Your child will receive a flyer from Portobello Open Door about an event that will be happening. Please look out for it.

HAPPY CAMPERS
Welcome back to our P7 campers. They had a fantastic experience and were a real credit to themselves and the school. Well done!
Africa Week
The children have had a very rich experience this week, participating in all things ?African?. Mrs McGee has also sent us music, film and photo?s which we will show at the assemblies.
Note from Mrs McGee from Tanzania
?Dear All
We thought we?d like to send you our best wishes and a wee update on life out here just as you begin Africa Week.
So far it has been 9 weeks of ups and downs ? particularly when it comes to negotiating the steep paths in and around Legho village! As we?ve already mentioned we have had periods of heavy rain up in Legho and this has led to much entertainment for the local children as they watch us carefully to see if we?re going to fall over. Tanzanian people are particularly warm and friendly and we have been welcomed warmly wherever we have found ourselves ? this has always helped us deal with whatever small discomforts we?ve had to experiences
When we are teaching English we obviously try to speak as clearly and accurately as possible but there are often times when we have to modify our pronunciation to make ourselves understood ? particularly when it comes to vowel sounds?. We definitely need to come home soon!
Getting involved in another culture is endlessly fascinating- even the humdrum aspects of daily life are interesting. Take for example public transport, which in the town, comes in the form of ?the Daladala?- a small minibus held together with string, chewing gum and a lot of hope. It appears that the main objective is to see which bus will come tops in the ?cram-as-many-people/ animals / baggage /cooking implements/you-name-it-we?ll-carry-it-as possible competition.
It?s impossible to guess how many people are carried on any given Daladala as they whiz past at breakneck speed with young lads hanging out of the open door shouting the names of the destination points for any passenger brave enough to hail them. Each vehicle will have its own name and these give much food for thought to the intending passenger?
We?ve become addicted to spotting names as we travel around the area and have already notched up the ?Bam?shop, the ?God Bless Car Wash? and the ?Tough Hair Salon? as top of the pops in the strangest names chart.
I?ll finish now as we have to get ready to travel back up to the foothills to another secondary school (Olaleni) before going back to Legho.
Much love to everyone and Good luck for Africa Week ?
Many thanks for your continued support and co-operation.
