Dear Parents,
I have been welcomed back very warmly to St John?s, after my absence. And it feels so good to be getting back to normality after such a long time. My wrist is healing well and getting stronger with all of the physiotherapy and exercises. Thank you for all your prayers, and good wishes over the past months.
The school has been most ably run under Mrs McGee, she has done a great job, supported by Mrs Rutherford and Miss Farrell. Miss Lowrey is still unwell and we hope that she continues to make progress.
There have been many successes over the term sporting and academic, and the children have excelled themselves and have been a real credit to the school. The Nursery team too, have had a glowing report from the Care Commission. The staff in the school have continued to give their full commitment to your children. The next two weeks promises to be very full and eventful and I am hoping to meet many of you during this time.
This week we say goodbye to Mrs Christine Harrold, who has done a sterling job teaching pupils maths groups. Mrs Harrold leaves us to take on a new career in Interior Design. Mrs Jill Brown, who has been covering for Mrs Kelly in P2a, also leaves today. She has done a great job in P2. We wish her well for the future.
SCOTTISH-TANZANIAN LINK
A friendship is already established between co-operative women?s groups in Legho village and women in St John?s parish. We always welcome new ideas in further developing this relationship and would like to extend a warm invitation to anyone interested in coming along to our next meeting. This will be held in the St John?s Church hall on Thursday 21st June at 7.30pm. We will be joined by Monsignor Paul Uria who is here on holiday in the parish. Monsignor Paul is directly involved with the management committee which supports the Legho women?s groups and in that capacity, he will give us an update on progress with the women?s projects over the past year.
Big Thanks??.
Congratulations to the PTA and all parent, pupil and staff helpers who made last Saturday?s fair such an enjoyable event and also a great financial success ? current indications are that the figure will be in excess of £2400 which will help us to start our programme of purchasing Smartboards for our classes. Many thanks also for all the generous donations provided by friends and families of the school.
Abercorn Winners???.
Well done to Abercorn who won this term?s House competition and celebrated with an hour of fun and games in the playground on Wednesday afternoon. Houses are still competing for the overall winner of the House trophy for the year which is announced at the end of term assembly.
This Week????.
Next week is a very busy time, the penultimate before the end of term, here is a list of just some of the things happening:
? House Football/Basketball takes place next week
? Staff v Pupils Basketball match

Congratulations to Kay Hancock (P7a) and Martina Bell (P4b) for competing in the recent UK Championships for baton twirling at Linwood. Kay?s team got 3rd place and Martina?s got 1st. Kay also won 5th place for her individual freestyle routine. This was the first time both girls took part in this event, as well as the British Open in Perth 2 weeks ago when Kay?s team came 4th and Martina?s came 3rd. Well done girls!
Invitation to a Garden Party??..
Calum Patterson?s (P7b) older brother Euan (a former pupil of St John?s) has an excellent opportunity to take part in the Scottish Youth Theatre 3 week intermediate course, as part of their summer festival 2007. The cost of this will be £1,000. Euan has completed a sponsored cycle to help raise money to offset costs and the Patterson family are also hosting a Garden Party at their home on Saturday 16th June from 3.00pm ? 6.00pm (entry fee £1.50, which includes a free drink and cake.) Everyone is welcome to go along to 14 Bellfield Street, Portobello.
School Dinners??.
Please note that School meals will cost £1.60 from the beginning of next term.
Pupil Councillors
We are very proud of our 16 pupil councillors who represented the school at a meeting of the Holy Rood cluster schools held in the City Chambers on Monday. All 16 were a credit to St John?s and 3 of them were chosen to speak individually about the school?s achievements over this session. Luke Watson (4a), Jack McLeish (5a) and Chloe Feargus (6a) must be congratulated on their confident, articulate public-speaking skills, well done!
Mass of Friendship
Thanks to Fr Hennessey who celebrated a Mass of Friendship with the pupils of Primary 4. It was a lovely occasion for which Mrs Rennie and Mrs Plews had prepared the children extremely well as was evident from their participation in the mass.
