4 May 2007 - St John's joint winners of the Inspector's Cup!
Double delight for St. John?s!
After another entertaining evening of cup football, St. John?s P6/7 team triumphed as joint winners of the prestigious Inspector?s Cup. It is the first time St. John?s have won the 114-year-old trophy in the school?s history, a truly amazing achievement.
After last week?s victory in the School Board Cup, confidence was high as the P6/7 football team qualified for the final group stages of the Inspector?s Cup at Warriston playing fields. Having reached the last eight out of 56 teams from across the city, St. John?s faced a tough group, which included local neighbours Duddingston Primary along with St. Peter?s and Bonaly. St. John?s drew their first game 1-1 with Duddingston before securing a narrow 1-0 victory over a good St. Peter?s side and after going a goal down against the run of play to Bonaly PS the team showed great character to score an equaliser through Keiran Muirhead. The draw was enough to secure a deserved second place in the group behind Duddingston on goal difference and a place in the semi-finals.
With the thought of last week?s penalty shootout fresh in the players minds, St. John?s started like a whirlwind against the winners of the second group Blackhall PS. St. John?s were two goals up in a matter of minutes and in a masterful first half performance St. John?s scored two more goals to make the half time score 4-0. The second half saw more shots on goal from the St. John?s team as they attacked in waves. Three more goals sealed an overwhelming 7-0 victory and St. John?s were in another cup final.
In the final St. John?s again faced local rivals Duddingston and the expectant crowd kicked every ball of the final as they encouraged their team to the full time whistle. Both sides had chances but neither could make the breakthrough and so five minutes golden goal extra time was played. After another tense five minutes of play no winning goal came and the cup was shared. This was yet another great achievement from a team made up of mostly P6 boys who must have a good chance of winning the trophy outright next season.
We congratulate the whole team and coaches on a great victory. St. John?s P6/7 team are coached by Norrie Sinclair, Mark Muirhead and Neil Fairnie (Snr) and the team included Marcus Campanile, Oliver Carnevale, Neil Fairnie, Marc Forrest, Gavin Kneeshaw (Captain), Dylan McCallum, Scott Morrison, Keiran Muirhead, Joseph Muzyka, Jordan Sinclair, Peter Wood and Jack Wright.
Look out for a photo of the teams with the trophy in the Evening News within the next few days!
