2 Feb 2007 - St John's Newsletter

St John?s RC Primary School
Newsletter
Friday 2nd February 2007
School Website: www.stjohnsportobello.ik.org

Dear Parents,
It?s Catholic Education week from 5th February, finishing on the 11th February. The theme this year is ?be like Shining Stars?. We will have presentation Barnardo?s on Friday 9th February for all the children as part of this theme.

Message from a parent?.
Further to your note in the newsletter about parents parking outside school, I wondered if it would be possible to extend the message to parents who consistently park in the red cycle lanes (which also have single yellow lines) on the main road just outside school. This is very dangerous not only for the many parents who cycle to collect children and have to veer out of the cycle lane and around the parked cars, but also for any children cycling as well, for example those leaving the High School. I don't know what the official line is regarding parking in cycle lanes but they are presumably there for a reason, and yet are blatantly ignored by parents.

Parents Consultations???
You will now have received your letter re Parental Consultations. Please return your child?s appointment slip to the school as soon as possible and certainly before Friday 9th February. Please note that we cannot give specific times to anyone. Mrs Rutherford has issued a separate letter to parents of pupils she works with.

PTA Family Ceilidh
Tickets for the PTA family ceilidh will be on sale at the school gates on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th February at 8.45am. Last year tickets sold out, so buy them next week to make sure of a place.

The Ceilidh is on Saturday, 3rd March, 18.00-20.00 at Old Parish Church, Bellfield St. Tickets are £3.50 per child and £5.00 per adult. A hot dog and squash are included in the price.

All proceeds go straight to the school and nursery. This year, thanks to parents' support, we have already been able to give £2,500 for IT, a library and outdoor play equipment.

Have you paid?
Just a wee note to remind parents of any outstanding excursions, workshops still to be paid:

Drumming & Percussion Workshop P3-P7 on 28th February. Cost is £1.60

P6a, P6b, P7a & P7b enjoyed a puppet performance on Wednesday 24th January. Cost was £3.00.

P6a & P6b visited the Palace of Holyrood and the Museum of Scotland on Thursday 1st February. The cost for both trips was £6.00.

If you have not paid for any of the above trips, please send any outstanding monies into school, to the class teacher, with your child?s name, class, amount and name of trip/workshop clearly marked on a sealed envelope.

February Break??..
Just a wee reminder that we break up next Friday, 9th February for the February break. School restarts on Monday 19th February. I hope you all have a lovely holiday.

Friends of Chernobyl's Children
FOCC is a charity which brings children from Belarus who are suffering from the after-effects of the fallout from the Chernobyl Nuclear accident to the UK each year to boost their immune systems and improve their health. Several St John's families are hosts to children who come in September for one month - this can boost their life expectancy by up to two years.

We are holding a nearly new sale of children's clothing, including ski wear on Saturday 3rd Feb from 10-12am at Portobello Old Parish Church, Bellfield Street to help fund the trip. There will be home baking and a tombola.

We are also looking for more host families for September 07 and other volunteers to help with the trip. Please call Susan Wright if you would like to discuss what is involved on 669 1760 or visit www.focc.org.uk

Many thanks for your continued support and
co-operation.
